I just read this interesting article. Do you think homeschool parents are strange? Most of the negative comments about homeschooling that I have heard are related to the kids. However, this article mentions that her husband has found that people think that they, the parents, are strange because they want to spend time with their kids! I guess now that I think about it, maybe those comments like, “I could never homeschool!” are really saying, “I think you’re strange.”
I have heard the following excuses:
- I have too many other things I need(want) to do.
- My kids drive me crazy.
- My kids won’t listen to me, how could I teach them?
And from a public school teacher, “I get along with other people’s children a lot better than my own.”
And homeschoolers are the ones who are strange?
Comments like that always make me sad. Children can–and should be–a huge source of joy. May our time spent with our children draw us closer to them.

I love spending time with my son and watching him learn new things. He gets so excited when he finally grasps a new concept I'm teaching him – I wouldn't miss that for the world.
