Camping in the Smokies

Spread the love

Well, we did it. We’ve been saying we ought to try it for a long time.

We took the whole family camping.

In tents. (Isn’t our campsight  pretty? Cades Cove is a beautiful campground.)

And it rained…every…night.

But we still had a wonderful time.

We visited the schoolhouse where my grandfather attended: Little Greenbrier Schoolhouse.

This is the Walker Sisters Cabin. The Walker Sisters were my great-great aunts. My mother used to visit them as a child when they lived in this cabin. (They refused to move when the land was made into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The park service agreed to let them stay until they died.)

Someone wasn’t up for the hike.

That same someone was still tired on the way home!

  1. I love camping, its so much fun! We didn’t go last Summer though 🙁
Your tents are kind of weird. Our are wide and short, your are skinny and tall lol.

  2. What a great trip! Love camping! And your camp site does look pretty 🙂
I love the screen tent you have…..good for keeping out all the extra visitors (bugs)! Looks like you guys had a lot of fun!

  3. Now that is very interesting. I love that your aunts didn’t want to leave. And what an amazing mom you are to camp out with a baby. Reading this post makes me want to take my family on a camping trip. My husband would love it and so would they!

  4. Kristen, that’s so neat about your gg aunts living in the Smokies after the park was created. I’ve read about the park creation, some of the people who continued to live there … it’s such a fascinating chain of events. The land there is just wonderful (for farming, etc.), and I can only imagine how upset the people were when they had to move. We’ve vacationed there a few times but have never camped. Maybe next time. 😀
