Blogging 101

Spread the love

I’ve done a fair amount of reading on what makes a good blog. I also read several very good homeschool blogs. And there is one thing that is consistently at the top of the list for what makes a good blog.

Do you know what it is?

Regular posting.

They say that it isn’t necessary to post every day, but to have a consistent schedule. So if you’re a 3 time a week blogger, that’s great. Just don’t suddenly turned into a twice a day blogger.

I’m pretty sure that missing 2 weeks is not recommended for a new blog.

Another thing that a good blog shouldn’t do is start a post with,

Sorry it has been so long since I’ve blogged.

So I won’t say that.

But I am.

My last post was for this really fun carnival: The Virtual Curriculum Fair. I had lots to say about math. But last week was about history, and though I have a history curriculum that I love, I am struggling to make it work in my house. This week’s topic is art and finding time for the arts. Let’s just say I feel completely unqualified to write on that topic because I fail at that so miserably. (Though as I write this my daughters and baby are downstairs listening to classical music together. Hmmm… Maybe not so bad after all. Oh wait, now it’s the Charlie Brown theme song.)

The truth is I’ve been busy. I’ve been busy with my part-time job. I’ve been busy with homeschooling. I’ve been busy with laundry. And I’ve been busy with basketball. Really insanely busy with basketball. Please remind me next year that my oldest son does not need to play basketball for our local homeschool team. They have too many games. Way too many for me to drag my other 4 children to.

Hopefully I will not be starting my next blog post with…

Sorry it has been so long since I’ve blogged.

Hopefully I will feel more inspired to write. I have a couple of long overdue book reviews. I also have just started trying out some new homeschool products to review. I can write about our experiences with Dianne Craft’s brain therapy. I’ve started making green smoothies. Or maybe I’ll share some tips on how not to transfer e-mail to a new laptop.

Until then, I’ll be busy.

  1. Oh Kristen, I wish you wouldn’t worry about the Fair…it’s meant to be fun. When you get a chance, grab a cup of tea and read what some of the other ladies wrote, I think maybe you’ll stop feeling so bad about what you are or aren’t doing in art. ;0)

And life always has to come first. Thank you for being real.

  2. I think the very same thing when I’ve been away from my blog. I want to apologize, but I know ‘they’ say you shouldn’t. 🙂 You do sound like you’ve been busy. I have too, and though I try to keep up with blogging 3ish times a week, it hasn’t happened. I look forward to your reviews, and I hope things continue to go well for you and the family.

  3. What do you mean too many basketball games??? I wonder if you’ll still be speaking to me the next time we see each other?!

  4. “Amen” to what Susan said 🙂 What’s really funny is that my “goal” for the beginning of this year was to get more consistent in my blogging, not necessarily with the number of posts but with topical posts. I haven’t given it a second thought since Jan. 2! haha There is a reason that my children and my husband call me “Dori” (just keep swimming :p) Love ya lady!

  5. Kristen, I replied on my blog but wasn’t sure you’d see the reply. Here it is:

I downloaded the issue in pdf format then transferred it to my kindle under “documents”. The kindle fire has a pdf reader. Since I know little about ereaders, I can only assume this holds true across the board?
